Week 5

Week 5, day 1, Rubber Boot Journalist. Starting the south side of Mt. Shasta today. They do some different crops from the east side--wild rice, some blueberries, mini watermelons, cattle, forages. Also made it a third of the way through Falling!

Week 5, day 2, Rubber Boot Journalist.  Still working on the south side of Mt. Shasta.  Something really cool is there are parts of this area where you can see Mt. Shasta and Mt. Lassen.  Made the halfway point on the last read on Falling, too.

Week 5, day 3, Rubber Boot Journalist.  Had an early photo shoot in the rain and actually pulled out the rubber boots to wade in the manure this morning.  Now I'm back and working on Mt. Shasta south again.  This ranch in raises a lot of forage and they raise enough for their cattle and the wildlife.  Pretty cool, huh?  On the Falling front I finished the read and I'm sending it off to the editor.  Next order of business the back cover blurb.

Week 5, day 4, Rubber Boot Journalist.  Wrapping up the Mt. Shasta south article and going over notes for the Mt. Shasta west article.  I've added some pics of Timothy hay being harvested.  And I'm printing off Falling for my editor!

Week 5, day 5, Rubber Boot Journalist.  Finishing the Mt. Shasta south today and looking at wild rice production.  Also trying to finish the back blurb for Falling while 40 mph north winds howl outside my door.

Week 4

Week 4, day 1, Rubber Boot Journalist. Back in the office and working the east side of Mt. Shasta and falling. It's Monday but when I look at these photos who cares. Such a fabulous mountain!

Week 4, day 2, Rubber Boot Journalist. Doing interviews today and transcribing tapes. Very time consuming and monotonous work the transcribing. Making good progress on Falling too.

Week 4, day 3, Rubber Boot Journalist. Still waiting on two interviews which will mean more tapes to transcribe on the Mt. Shasta article. This is some of the finest farming dirt anywhere and they grow superior potatoes, onions, forages like alfalfa, cattle, peppermint, nursery strawberries and horseradish. They are limited on what they grow because of the short growing season at this altitude. Also working on Falling today and trying to wrap up the black moment so a busy day here.

Week 4, day 4, Rubber Boot Journalist. Had an early photo shoot this morning and putting the finishing touches on the Mt. Shasta east article. Today's pics are of hay waiting to be baled. The other pic is the final draft of Falling and then it's off to the editor! 

Week 4, day 5, Rubber Boot Journalist. Digging in today to finish the east side of Mt. Shasta. Did you know they grow some of the finest horseradish here? If you look for horseradish in your grocery story it's the one with waterfowl on the label. Also starting the final read of falling. 

Week 3

Week 3, day 1, the Rubber Boot Journalist is working on a series of articles on the different types of agriculture on the four sides of Mt. Shasta.  This week is the north side which has everything from cattle, vegetables, tree fruit and lavender.

Week 3, day 2, the Rubber Boot Journalist continues on the north side of Mt. Shasta typing away on vegetables grown there.  I'm amazed they can grow such beautiful vegetables with the wind and cold weather, but these high tunnels that look like a greenhouse really help. I’m also making progress on Falling.

Week 3, day 3 the Rubber Boot Journalist continues work on the Mt. Shasta series focusing on lavender today and made huge progress on Falling yesterday and hopes to get more done today.

Week 3, day 4, the Rubber Boot Journalist is still working on the north side of Mt. Shasta agriculture and starting a cattle article today. Also making good progress on Falling.
